Scattered Thoughts | ചിതറിയ ചിന്തകൾ

2003 - ക്രിക്കറ്റ് പ്രേമം അസ്ഥിക്ക് പിടിച്ച വർഷം! ക്രിക്കറ്റ് മാത്രം  കാണുകയും, കളിക്കുകയും, ചിന്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത നാളുകൾ. ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ഇല്ലാതെ ഒരു ദിവസം പോലും അന്ന് സങ്കൽപ്പിക്കാൻ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നില്ല.  2003 മുതൽ 2010 വരെയുള്ള സ്പോർട്സ് മാസികകൾ പലതും മനപ്പാഠമായിരുന്നു.  പിന്നിൽ നിന്ന് പത്രം വായിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയ  കാലം. അന്ന് വായിച്ച ലേഖനങ്ങൾ ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ ഓർമ്മയിലെത്താറുണ്ട്. കളിയെഴുത്തിനെ കൊതിയോടെ കണ്ടുതുടങ്ങിയ ദിനങ്ങൾ... ആ വർഷം ഡിസംബറിലാണ് ബോർഡർ-ഗവാസ്‌കർ ട്രോഫി പരമ്പര ആദ്യമായി  കാണുന്നത്. മത്സരം പുലർച്ചെ അഞ്ചുമണിക്ക് ആരംഭിച്ചാലുടനെ ടിവിക്കു മുന്നിൽ ചടഞ്ഞിരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങും. നാട്ടിലെ അമ്പലത്തിൽ ഏഴു ദിവസത്തെ സപ്‌താഹവായന നടക്കുന്നത് ആ നാളുകളിലാണ്. അന്ന് ഇന്റർനെറ്റ് സജീവമല്ലാതിരുന്നത് കൊണ്ട് കളിയുടെ വിവരങ്ങൾ അറിയാൻ വീട്ടിൽ തിരിച്ചുപോകുകയോ, കൂട്ടുകാരുടെ വീടുകൾ ആശ്രയിക്കുകയോ വേണം. ആ ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ എവിടെ പോയാലും കളിയുടെ സ്കോർ വിവരങ്ങൾ അറിയാൻ വല്ലാതെ ആവേശം കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പരമ്പര 1-1 നു അവസാനിച്ചെങ്കിലും, അവസാനപരമ്പരയിൽ വിജയിച്ചതിന്റെ പേരിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ ടീം ട്രോഫി സ്വന്തമാക്കി....

Do we need to love anyone to experience love? Not always, all the time. If we reduce romance into a loving relationship between two individuals, we certainly miss out noticing some romances that are equally loveable. Some relationships are indeed stronger and tighter than what it is between two loving souls.  My romantic journey with cricket blossomed when I was in childhood. I sense a certain kind of affection and joy when I watch and play the game.  I lifted the bat first when I was a six-year child. My first ground was our home dining space. I used to throw up my rubber ball into the wall and wait for it to come back to me as I take my batting stance. It was a one-man game. I used to set imaginary field restrictions and likely match scenarios. (Eg, 38 runs from 30 balls. Three wickets left). I would add me in the team as an all-rounder trying to finish the game for my team. Most often, the match would end up as a tie or our surprise win.  The scenario would change ...

 What is the first memory that comes to your mind when you think about MS? For me, it is always the World Cup-winning six at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in the night of the Sunday final. MS is a self-made and selfless cricketer. He never begged for chances. He knew about his strengths and limits. He is a calm and proactive leader. He was able to bring out the best aspects of several cricketers. Virat, Rohit, Raina, Ashwin and Jadeja had the luxury of playing under a wonderful skipper with an amazing cricket brain.  Dhoni's logical moves have its own fan base. We have all seen what happened in the 2011 WC final as he chose to bat ahead of an in-form Yuvraj despite not being in great touch throughout the tournament. His calculation was that right hand-left hand combination can unsettle the Lankans in middle overs. Dhoni's ability to play spin nicely and Yuvraj's vulnerability to off-spin (remember Murali was playing his last ODI) was another reason why he promoted himself up ...

ക്രിക്കറ്റ് കാണൽ തുടങ്ങിയ നാൾ മുതൽ ദ്രാവിഡിനോട് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഇഷ്ടമാണ്. എല്ലാവരും ടീമിന് വേണ്ടിയാണ് കളിക്കുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ, ഒരടിയന്തിര പ്രശ്നം വന്നാൽ ചില കളിക്കാർ റിസ്ക്ക് എടുക്കാൻ ഒരൽപ്പം മടിച്ചെന്നു വരാം. തൻ്റെ കരിയർ അപകടത്തിൽ ആയാലോ എന്ന ഭയം കൊണ്ടാണ് അങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിക്കുന്നത്. അവിടെ ദ്രാവിഡ് വേറിട്ട് നിൽക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യക്ക് വേണ്ടി വിക്കറ്റ് കീപ്പ് ചെയ്യാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചതടക്കം പല ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടാനുണ്ട്. അവസാന മാച്ച് കളിച്ചു കാണികളുടെ കയ്യടി നേടി റിട്ടയർ ചെയ്യാതിരുന്നതിന് അയാൾക്ക് കാരണങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു - ഇന്ത്യയുടെ അടുത്ത ടെസ്റ്റ് സീസൺ തുടങ്ങാൻ ആറ് മാസം ഇടവേളയുണ്ട്. സ്വന്തം കരിയർ അത്രയും വലിച്ചു നീട്ടാതെ, ആ സമയം കൊണ്ട് ഒരു പുതിയ കളിക്കാരന് തൻ്റെ കഴിവ് തെളിയിക്കാൻ  സമയം ലഭിക്കുമല്ലോ. അതാണ് ദ്രാവിഡ്. അയാൾക്ക് ടീമായിരുന്നു എല്ലാത്തിലും വലുത്. മറ്റൊരു ക്യാപ്റ്റനും സഹകളിക്കാരൻ 194ൽ നിൽക്കെ ഇന്നിങ്‌സ് ഡിക്ലയർ ചെയ്യാൻ ആലോചിക്കുമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. അന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കേട്ട വിമർശനങ്ങൾ കുറച്ചൊന്നുമായിരുന്നുമില്ല. പക്ഷെ, ടീമാണ് വലുതെന്ന് ചിന്തിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ വ്യക്തിഗത നേട്ടങ...
