Coronavirus: What we need to know
What is Coronavirus?
Coronavirus disease aka COVID-19 is a global pandemic. It was first reported in Wuhan, China in early 2020. They are a large family of viruses which cause illnesses in humans and animals. During the time of publishing (3/4/2020), above 10 lakh cases and 50,000 deaths have been reported so far. About 80 per cent of people recover from the disease without needing special treatment, according to WHO.
How it spreads
It spreads through contact with an infected person. This happens when they cough or sneeze. When a person touches a surface or object that has the virus, high chances the virus might spread.

Symptoms
People generally take up to 14 days to show symptoms. The most common hints are fever, tiredness and dry cough. Older people with asthma, diabetes or heart diseases are vulnerable to Corona.

Prevention and treatment
At present, there is no specific medicine to treat this virus.
- Inform your doctor about your travel and contact with travellers.
- Stay home.
- Wash your hands.
- Keep a safe distance.
- Call the helpline if you are sick.
- Cover your cough.
- Keep warm.
Recovery time
The recovery time for mild cases is up to two weeks. For recovery, it may take about 3-6 weeks for patients with severe or critical diseases.
Is COVID new?
This is a new strain discovered in 2019. It hasn’t been previously identified in humans.
When to use a mask
- If you are healthy, wear it if you are taking care of someone with a suspected infection.
- Wear it if you are coughing or sneezing.
- Understand how to use it and to dispose of properly.
Myths vs reality
Garlic/lemon are helpful remedies
False. Garlic is healthy. It may have some antimicrobial properties. But, there is no evidence that eating garlic or lemon has protected people.
Gargling protects people
False. While this may soothe a sore throat, it will not prevent the virus from entering your lungs—neither will drinking frequent sips of water.
Hot and humid weather can control Corona
False. The COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in all areas, including those with hot and humid weather.
