Soldiers and their selfless life

Soldiers are the unlucky lot. They run a selfless life. They work to protect us. Family life is a luxury for them. We all have come across their life stories. But when? After they die. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the bereaved families. We feel it as a personal loss. We often heap praises on them for their bravery. There ends the story. He too will be forgotten unless on special occasions. It is not anyone's fault. But it is a reality.

Every army man is taught to live a detached and dedicated life. Detached from own family because everyone in the country is their own people. Dedication towards the nation because that is what makes their job complete. India lost 20 soldiers (figures on June 17) to Chinese attack. This was soon after an agreement was reached between two countries. Reportedly, China also lost several men. Both countries minced no words in condemning the attack.
A troop was cornered and attacked by the Chinese army. The army men as per orders were removing the Chinese tents in the disputed area. This caused provocation from the Chinese side, according to defence sources quoted by the media.
Except probably in Punjab, most army men would have to convince their parents a lot to join this profession. This is due to the risky nature of this job. But we see no dearth in numbers while the recruitment drive is on. Why? Unemployment is a factor but these people love their country and their zeal keeps us all safe. Soldiers in the border live a dangerous life. They know that death can come anytime. But they aren't afraid of it. They stand courageous amid all negativity spreading around them. That makes them stand apart.
How are the governments treating them? Everyone appreciates their bravery. There are financial support systems for the family members of the martyred jawans. But one area we have not improved is that of addressing the conflict. After an attack takes place, we leave it to the army to retaliate. We 'celebrate' their befitting response like we did in the surgical strike. The case is laid to rest. Army has done its job wonderfully. What about the government? It was their job to ensure diplomacy. In the past few years, India has had troubled relations with most of the neighbouring countries. Our previous allies have turned against us. Policies like not emphasising on SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) have caused gaps in neighbourhood relations. It is time to seriously introspect. We can't slip the matter go out of hands and let the soldiers die. Diplomacy is not a publicity exercise to project that all is well. Neighbourhood relations are part of national security. We need to stand on our ground and be firm and tactical in these areas.

How to reduce casualties on borders

  • Ensuring extra vigilance methods in conflict regions (Eg Airforce, drone).
  • Provide army men with advanced weapons and bulletproof jackets.
  • Initiate peace talks at the earliest.
  • Prepare well to deal with any emergency situations.
  • Establish more medical facilities in the disputed areas.
